When you think of Hawaii, most of us imagine beaches, surfing, and cocktails. But did you know Hawaii has another, literally sweet secret? Maui Gold Pineapple. And where can you find it in its best form? Right at its birthplace, on a pineapple farm in Haliʻimaile on the island of Maui, which we visited ourselves.
Maui is a magical Hawaiian island known for its breathtaking beaches, green mountains, and unforgettable sunsets. It also hides a lesser-known but even more delicious treasure: pineapple plantations. Among them stands out Maui Pineapple, the only publicly accessible pineapple farm on the island, where you can enjoy one of the sweetest pineapples in the world, the already mentioned Maui Gold. The history of pineapples in Maui goes back over 100 years. While many large plantations disappeared over the years, the Haliʻimaile Pineapple Company has kept this tradition alive. The family-run farm grows these pineapples organically and offers visitors a unique insight into Hawaiian agriculture.
The most famous variety, Maui Gold, also known as variety 7350, is famous for its exceptional sweetness and high vitamin C content. It is grown in volcanic soil and is the result of years of selective breeding. It has up to three times more natural sugar content than other common varieties.
The farm processes up to 12,000 crates per week, around 3.7 million pineapples annually. Touring the farm is one of the most authentic experiences you can have on Maui, which we can confirm.
Pineapple Facts
Pineapples grow slowly from the center of the plant, not on a tree. From planting to harvest, it takes 18 months. After the first harvest, the same plant can produce two more fruits. Many might think pineapples originate from Hawaii, but in fact, James Dole brought pineapples to Hawaii by establishing the Dole Food Company and mass-producing canned pineapples.
Our Visit to the Maui Pineapple Farm
When we planned our stay on Maui, we knew we had to visit this farm. I must say it was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had. The beautiful farm, far from the tourist crowds, something so magical it’s almost indescribable in words. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by smiling guides who drew us into the world of pineapples with such enthusiasm that we started seeing pineapples in a completely new way, unlike ever before.
